FATHER FIGURES is dedicated to my Father JESUS BARRO JR. My pops passed away 8 years ago, and the beat just brought him back to memory in an undeniable way. This song came out of me in less than an hour. Not the first song I have written about the passing of my pops, but this one gave me closure since it is more a celebration of what he showed me than a recounting of his passing.
The 3rd verse is an amazing contribution by GRIDLOCK Family's GODS WILL or as he's known around CIPHER IN THE CIRCLE, WILL CUTT. This verse is supposedly many years old. When I showed Will this song during a CITC Recording Session, he showed me this verse and it was like he had written it just for this song. The angle he takes in the verse, that of a father speaking to his children from beyond the grave, letting them know he is still with them and supports them in all they do was literally like hearing my Dad give me his blessing on this project and the job I am doing as a father. To add to the coincidence, Will ends the verse with "I LOVE YOU BOTH, MY HOPE IS IN YOU" ....Me and my Brother Jesse Barro are my Father's two surviving kin. I'm telling, its like he talked directly to us through this verse. Thank you for blessing us with this Will.
